Your Guide to Becoming an LPC in Colorado in 2024

Congratulations on taking the exciting first step towards becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Colorado! Colorado LPC Supervision is here to guide you through the journey, and this post will focus on the latest requirements for licensure as of August 2024.

LPC Education Requirements

  • Hold a Master’s degree in counseling from a CACREP-accredited program (or equivalent).

LPC Supervised Experience Requirements

  • Complete a minimum of 2,000 hours of post-degree professional counseling under qualified supervision.
  • At least 1,500 hours must be face-to-face direct client contact, distributed over a minimum of twelve months.
  • Both in-person and telesupervision are acceptable formats.

LPC Supervisor Qualifications (New! Implemented September 1st, 2021):

Your supervisor must meet the following criteria:

  • The 3-3-4 Rule:
    • Three years OR 3,000 hours of post-degree clinical experience as a counselor (your 2,000 LPC supervision hours can count towards this).
    • Three Professional Development hours specific to clinical supervision, completed each renewal period.
    • Complete ONE of the following:
      • A minimum two-credit-hour graduate-level course on clinical supervision from a CACREP accredited program (or equivalent).
      • The Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) designation from the Center for Credentialing and Education (CCE).
      • A doctorate degree in Counselor Education and Supervision from a CACREP accredited program (or a counseling doctorate with a supervision component).

Examination:

  • Pass the National Counselor Examination (NCE).

Licensed Professional Counselor Additional Requirements for Licensure:

  • Complete a criminal background check.
  • Complete jurisprudence training specific to Colorado law and ethics.
